The 5 most beautiful churches in Vienna, Austria

01.05.2019

Sometimes people don´t really want to explore the city they are living in - that´s todally different with me and Vienna. I still wander around this gorgeous city overwhelmed by all the beautiful buildings. In many other cities almost every viennese church would be a "main tourist attraction". So I tried to rank the ones which are the most beautiful (from my point of view) - some of them are not even known by most of the locals, so prepare for some insider tip mixed with run-of-the-mill churches that you could also find in any good guidebook.

5. Votiv Church, 9th district

This impressive church is often mistaken for the famous "St. Stephan´s Cathedral", the main sight of Vienna as they got quite a simmilar architectural design.  As well as St. Stephan´s Cathedral, this church is located in Vienna´s city center - in this case just on the right side of the main university which is one of the most impressive buildings along the famous "Ring" - a street where many important historic buildings - like the opera house or the parliament building - are situated. In front of Votiv Church there´s a park where especially students like to hang out during the summer months. There are also some exhibitions taking place in this Church, recently for exsample an art exposition called "the great masters of the renaissance".

4. St. Joseph´s Church, 19th district

This church is also known as "Kahlenbergchurch" as it´s located on the socalled "Kahlenberg", a mountain (at least what´s called a mountain here in Vienna, I´d call it a hill) located on the edge of Vienna, in the 19th district. The location is stunning, but also the church itself is beautiful and got a really interesting history as it´s been damaged by a fire due to the "Second Turkish Siege of Vienna" in 1683. But what makes it even more special is that this church is surrounded by nature and is located just a couple meters from a gorgeous view point and a nice café where you can enjoy the view over Vienna drinking an Austrian "Verlängerter" which is pretty much a mocha or espresso prepared with double amount of water. You can drive up to St. Joseph´s church by car, take the bus number 38A or just simply walk up this hill/mountain. Definitely worth a visit!

3. St. Stephan´s Cathedral, 1st district

I know, maybe all of you expected this one to be number one and  so did I when I moved to Vienna. But hey, it´s under the top three, still gorgeous though. So even if this church is huge and impressive there are some things I quite not like about St. Stephan´s Cathedral, which made me rank it "just" at number three. Of course visiting this cathedral is a "must" when travelling to Vienna, but it´s quite crowded (well what else to expect from a main tourist attraction?), at least compared to the rest of Vienna which is pretty unhasty. Anyway it´s stunning standing infront of this massive masterpiece. Make sure you walk up the southern tower as you got an amazing view over Vienna´s first district from up there... but be prepared, it´s 136 meter high and you need to climb 343 steps to enjoy the breathtaking view.

2. St. Francis of Assisi Church, 2nd district

One of the most beautiful viennese churches, but also one of the least known. As I moved to Vienna, I did not know that this beauty exists. As I was hanging out at the socalled "Donauinsel", a beautiful island in the middle of the river Danube and was walking towards the metro station, I suddenly caught sight of this gorgeous church and have been really impressed ever since. Fortunately it´s really close to where my tutoring student lives, so I am now able to see it every week. Really looks like a disney castle - straight out of a fairytale. So just combine visiting this church and spending some hours walking/swimming/having a picnic at the lovely "Donauinsel" as "St. Francis of Assisi Church" is just simply on the left shore of river Danube across the bridge from the metro station "Donauinsel".

1. St. Charles Church, 4th district

I guess seeing the photos might already explain why I placed this church as number one. It looks stunning no matter which time of the day or which season. In spring there are some pretty flowerbeds with tulips or other spring flowers close to this church, which gives it a really special look, in summertime there are lots of people sitting on the edge of the reservoir chatting, having a coffee, reading a book or just simply enjoying, in autum you can walk through the park which is located infront of the church and enjoy the variety of colorful leaves and in wintertime you can get the ultimate christmas mood by spending some hours drinking punch, hot wine or eggnog, eating gingerbread or just simply strolling through the christmas market, which is located just in front of "St. Charles Church". Don´t miss this special church when visiting Vienna!
